Abraham In Our Closet

I mentioned on our Organized Friends Facebook page that I planned to work in our master bedroom closet this weekend. Luckily, I did what I said and I have AFTER pictures! You will have to look on the Organized Friends to see the BEFORE pictures. 

The very first thing I did was to move this mirror to BEHIND the closet door. We rarely use it and when we do we pull it out of the closet. So tucked behind is better so it is out of the way and doesn't get damaged. Once the door is opened it is hidden. Some things just need to be hidden!

Next up, I decided my shorts, capris and jeans needed to be above my shirts rather than stuffed on one shelf off to the side. It was getting messy and to me it made sense to have them stored similar to how I have done it in the past. One stack is jeans, another capris and the last stack is shorts. All nicely folded. 

My husband had all of his pants stuffed into one shelf as well. But since he doesn't wear capris he only needed two stacks. I folde everything neatly for him. I moved his gym bag above the pants. I put all the boxes one one shelf which made room for some folded t shirts to fit next to the ball caps. (The t shirt stack is not shown in this picture). I also worked on his hanging items. I put all work items on the left side and his casual clothes on the right. I put like shirts together on the bar. I even became a little obsessed and changed out some of the hangers so they would look better. I know it isn't necessary, but for my brain it looks nicer! I also pulled out some old uniforms that I think he told me we can get rid of. I will check with him soon on that!

And whoever says decluttering doesn't pay is wrong. I found a penny in our closet. Abraham Lincoln smiling back at me. Does anyone really say decluttering doesn't pay? :)

I noticed things I was getting rid of were starting to pile up...hangers that don't match, a file box of now empty hanging file folders, a piece of luggage along with some previous Wednesday 15 items I needed to put with my other ones for Goodwill. I'm keeping the gray bin, of course!

This is my side of the closet again. I moved a big coat of my husband to the back there. It just seemed in the way on his side. I tucked the suitcases together and move the cat beds to the floor in our room (although I don't really want them out either if the cats aren't going to use them). Suddenly, just moving those things helped create more floor space, which makes it feel less crowded.

This is the middle shelf in our closet. I don't like what I'm storing there really. The top bin is my husbands memorabilia. The next shelf has curtains we have yet to hang. The third and fourth shelves have sewing items, but yet my sewing machine is in another closet. The fifth shelf and the floor is where we have been putting our laundry baskets with dirty clothes. I spared you a visual of that! I will say this entire section needs more work. I'm not happy with it yet.

All the bins you can see used to reside in our basement at the old house. They are not what I want to see everyday. I may try to hide them with fabric or buy bins that match. In the meantime, I will keep tweaking things and see if I can make it more appealing to the eyes. Oh, and nearly all of them have keepsake type items...which we really, really need to go through to determine is they are still keepsakes.

We are also storing photos in our closet. Not my preference and there may be a few other places to move them to. I'm just not there yet. In the meantime I went through one pile and found quite a bit to toss and was able to put some pictures in a couple of the albums and the rest in the gray box. There is still an odd pile that I have yet to deal with, but it is improved. 

I will be sure to post if I make more progress! For now, I'm much happier with how it looks than I was a few days ago.
